“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” –1 John 4:1
“But test everything: hold fast to what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” –1 Thessalonians 5:21
In the beginning, mankind had no need for discernment. Adam and Eve knew of two realms; God and his world. They knew God was perfect, and his world was very good. After the fall, things became very different because they became like God, knowing good and evil. Before the fall, they only had knowledge of good.
The serpent, who was more crafty than the rest of the beasts, came to offer our first parents a test. What would they use as their source to test truth claims against; God’s word or human reason?
From this point in history to the present, mankind has need for discernment. We are called to test truth claims. You do this hundreds of times each and every day. The question is, what are you using as your source to test those claims against? When you take a test is school, you know how well you did by comparing your answers to the answer key. By default, like Adam and Eve, you will use your own reason as the answer key. How well did that go for them, and their children? When was the last time you tested the answer key to see if it was accurate anymore?
