Skin For Skin

Read Job Chapter 2 as a family.

Discussion Questions:

Satan says “skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life.” Do you think this statement is true? Was it true of Job? Has it been true for other men? If it is true on some level, how often do you think the Devil speaks things that are true?

What do you think are God’s affections towards Job? Or how does God feel toward Job? I’m asking what God thinks about Job, much like I might ask you what you think about a certain person you see on a regular basis.

What purpose do Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite have for coming to see Job? It appears that these friends were from different parts of the country. It would have taken time for the news to get to them and for them to arrange such a gathering. By the time they come, their friend was unrecognizable. Seven days is the amount of time they wait in silence with their friend Job. Respect for him demands that they wait for Job to speak the first words. This act of the friends shows an amazing amount of love and wisdom. As the story goes on, we may find out that this initial act of love is the pinnacle of their visit.

Can you think of a time that a friend of yours was suffering? What steps did you take to bring comfort to them? Was it on any level par with what Job’s friends did? What is one thing you could do even now for this friend you initially thought of?
