So then, brothers, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh, for if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:12-13
Living according to the flesh (from these verses) is letting the sinful deeds of the body live. Letting those deeds prosper and flourish unhindered and unchecked kills our life and future. We do this daily when we do not put the sinful habits to death that we know we should. For instance, say we are dabbling in pornographic images, videos, or stories. If we continue to daily let these things, and this sin, prosper in our flesh, we are killing ourselves and are on the path towards hell. “Are we to continue in sin so that grace may abound? Absolutely not!”
The Christian is obligated to put pornography, or any other sinful habit to death. This is an obligation, not to the flesh, but to the Spirit. The Spirit intercedes with our spirit and leads us away from this and other sin. It grieves the Spirit when we let these sins flourish in our flesh, and any Christian knows that this is true. We can feel Him groan against our flesh leading us to put our sin to death.
God is good. He is a good Father who does not want to see his children enslaved to their sinful flesh. He wants to see them truly free to live, play, and enjoy the beauties of his creation. He indeed has a new heaven and new earth in store for us, but in the meantime, we are to enjoy what he has made the first go-round.
