Memory Verse #131 Philippians 3:9
…and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.
Adam was created righteous. He was created righteous and not eternally righteous like God. Since the fall, man has lost his righteousness; “for there is no one righteousness, no not one.”
God gave man a law which reflected back to man God’s righteousness. In keeping God’s law, man could claim righteousness once again. Yet Paul tells us that he did not “have a righteousness of his own that comes from the law.” So we as humans on God’s earth have neither an inherent righteousness, nor an earned righteousness that comes through effort. What is the solution?
We can gain the righteousness back that has been lost to humanity through faith in Christ. It is an imputed righteousness and not an infused one. This righteousness is credited to us in the courtroom of heaven, but does not infuse us so that we become perfect.
God’s gift to you is a righteousness that you did nothing to earn. In contrast this righteousness is just the opposite of what you deserve. We deserve judgement for our unrighteousness, and yet Jesus bore that penalty for us as well.
We owe everything to Jesus!
