Fighter Verse For July 26, 2015
Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. –Psalm 34:9-11
Children are intended to be taught the fear of the Lord from their father. King David is the author of the psalm. He calls for the children to come close and listen to him because he will teach them the fear of the Lord. Doing this is a lifelong process. It is one that must begin by the father himself fearing God, and then turning to instruct his children what he has learned. If the father does not fear God first, he will inevitably teach his children to despise the Lord on account of his hypocrisy.
So how is it going for you? David commands you first to fear the Lord. He tells you that if you fear him, you will lack no good thing. And then he substitutes the word fear for the word seek. Fearing God begins with seeking him.
“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” (Isaiah 55:6-7 ESV)
