Deuteronomy 6:4-5–Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Marriages break apart for numerous reasons. One of the reasons why this happens is because the more two people get to know one another, the more they don’t like what the other person is like. They may appear to be faultless in the beginning, but then as time goes on they find out that each has many faults. I am not suggesting that this is a good or right reason for a divorce; but simply to point out this fact.
It is not so with God. The more we get to know him, the more we will fall in love with him. This relationship really has the opposite effect. In the beginning, he may appear to have some faults (though he does not). Then the more we gain knowledge of him, the more we find out that it is us who have the faults and not him.
In order for us to begin to love the Lord the way we ought, we must run to Jesus. He must wash us clean through the gospel in order for us to see God in his true beauty. Then once we have come to Jesus, we will be able to grow in our knowledge of God. When we grow in our knowledge of God, we will grow in our love for God.
