The Philosophical Head Spin Of The Word Made Flesh

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. -John 1:1-3

If you have been a Christian for any length of time, no doubt have read this verse in the beginning of John many times. How many times have you pondered what it is saying? I have been milling over it the past couple of mornings and can’t seem to find the words to describe how indescribable it is. I will just share some thoughts and hope that they are helpful in some way.

The word “word” means word, logic, or intelligence. In the beginning of time there was God, and his intelligence. When the Lord decided to take the ideas he had in his mind and actually create those into existence; he spoke his ideas into the air and his ideas became what he commanded. They came into existence when he spoke them. And the spoken word or voice that went forth from God’s mouth was Jesus Christ.

Genesis 1:1-5 says:

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Jesus Christ, the Word and Intelligence of God, was in the beginning with God. God had creation designed in his mind and then he said, “Let there be light.” When the intelligence of God said that light should come into existence, it happened. Once it happened, the Lord was able to see with his eyes the thing he had conceived in his mind. Once he saw it, he said it was very good. And because he always speaks the truth, and he creates what he speaks; he made creation good by declaring it to be. With me so far?

When Jesus came into the world 2000+ years ago, he was the word made flesh. All of the words used previously in the Scriptures of his future coming were fulfilled when the baby lay in the manger. He was the full intelligence of God contained in the image of a little helpless baby. How inconceivable is this truth! If Jonny Ive (the chief designer at Apple) were to walk the isles of a developer conference where all attenders had their iPhones, iPads, air pods, etc; he might be thinking, “You are using my intelligence put on display at this conference.” How much more the God who designed everything in creation to walk upon the earth as a thirty year old man and not to be recognized as its Creator? It’s absurd, it really is.

I admit that I really like to read philosophy, but have such a hard time getting my head around the truth and beauty of John 1:1-3.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. -John 1:1-3
