“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” -John 15:13 NIV
Sacrificing self for the sake of others seems both the simplest and hardest thing one might do. Stepping in between a criminal and your wife is what every man hopes he would do amid a crisis. My guess is that most men would find themselves doing this in the moment. But laying down self for the sake of your wife every mundane moment of every mundane day takes a supernatural act of grace. It’s much harder to do latter than it is the former.
Jesus did not do one thing that he wanted to do. He sacrificed self for the sake of others. He did only what he saw his Father doing in heaven. This is love. He laid down his life, not only for his Father, but for all those who place their trust upon him.
“Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.” -John 5:19
