The Slave Woman And The Free

[Read Genesis Chapter 16]

Genesis chapter 16 tells the strange account of Abraham, the man of faith, attempting to fulfill God’s promise by an earthly means. He was told that his offspring would number the stars in the heavens. He believes this to be true, yet must have thought it was up to him to figure out another option apart from his wife Sarai.

How often do you get tired of waiting for God to fulfill his promise? How often have you gone outside the protection and counsel of God’s Word to another source of instruction? How often have you decided that you know better?

Galatians 4:21–31 tells us that Hagar’s son and Sarah’s son represent two covenants. The one covenant from Mount Sinai which brings law, slavery, and death. The other is the covenant of promise which brings life and is embraced by faith. The text concludes:

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman. -Galatians 4:31

The BibleChrist sets us free to be the children of promise. Let’s seek the grace to remain under the wings of shelter which the Word of God provides.
