Astounded At Authority

Matthew 7:28-29 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

I can imagine just a little what it must have been like to be a scribe sitting under the teaching of Jesus. I have taught the Bible quite a number of times in my life. Nearly every time I publicly teach, I am standing in between God and the people and declaring from the Scriptures thus saith the Lord!

Jesus comes along and does not do this. He teaches as though he is the authority behind the Scriptures. "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. In the rain fell in the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been found on the rock." Everyone who hears these words of mine? That‘s authority; and I would have been astounded to sit under this teaching.

I pray each of you hear the words of your Savior this day as you gather with God's people to worship in Spirit and Truth!
