“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! -Matthew 7:7–11
Christmas time is fast approaching. I am seeing Karie (my wife) spend more time on her computer these days surfing Amazon for gifts. “Don’t look at the emails we get from Amazon honey,” she will say. I love it when she says that … I love it when she says that because it means she has gotten me a good gift. I, as well as the kids, love to get gifts. I also, and maybe even more, love to give gifts. Karie no doubt will be either sitting on the floor when we all open our presents, or she will be reclining in the corner of our living room. Either way, she will be watching with a subtle but sweet smile while we open our gifts with joy. She loves to give gifts. She loves to give good gifts. She typically knows us well enough to get us the things we need. Sometimes, like last night with Rylee, she will ask what we need.
Our heavenly Father loves to give good gifts. He knows us well enough to get us the things that we need. Yet he desires for us to ask him. Ask, and it will be given; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened; everyone who asks receives.
The person I love and adore more than any in all of creation is my beloved wife. The Lord reminds me that compared to him, she is evil. Even though both her and I are evil, she still loves to give good gifts to her family. How much more does the Lord love to give good gifts to his children when he has only holy and perfect desires. Let this portion in Matthew encourage you to pray to your heavenly Father and ask him for the things you need.
How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
