The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1 ESV)
In this modern age of electricity, pocket flashlights, night vision goggles, and lights from our cell phone camera, it is hard to imagine what the psalmist means by saying the Lord is his light. In the time of this psalm, there would have been only the light from fire and from the sun. Without light, a person has no real sense of direction or protection.
We are reminded here that God is our light. He illumines life around us. He enables us to see and discern things clearly because of his salvation through Jesus. Without Christ, we would be as blind as a Philistine soldier wandering aimlessly in a desert on a stormy and overcast night. We are also reminded that God is our stronghold. The stronghold is the place of refuge, the save hiding place which shields and protects us from our enemies.
As you go through your day today, remember that you have nothing to fear. You are safe behind the stone wall castle of salvation holding a million watt flashlight in the palm of your hand. You have the helmet of salvation protecting your melon, the shield of faith, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel, and the sword of the Scriptures. Whom shall you be afraid? The Lord is your light and your salvation, he is the stronghold of your life.
