Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6 ESV)
Many of us struggle with fear and dread. Whether that be public speaking, the bully down the street, or the opinion of our coworkers. It may be the fear of things like disorder, aloneness, or commitment. Whatever the fear might be, let the truth of God’s word set us free so that we might be strong and courageous.
We have a God who knows everything there is to know in all of creation. He is omniscient. That means that he knows all things actual and all things possible in one eternal act. It is not as though he needs to count all the stars to know there number, or sift through your hair to know the number of strands; he knows it all together in one simple and eternal act. He is also in every place at the same time. He is omnipresent. We could not ascend to the heights of the heavens, nor descend to the depths of the sea and be free from his presence. He is everywhere all of the time and will never leave us or forsake us. God thirdly has all power. He is omnipotent. There is not one volt from a battery that gets it’s power from a place other than God. He is the strength behind a baby’s first cry, the most horrific hurricane, and everything in between.
These three attributes of God are meant to produce in us trust. Faith can be seen as a triangle with three points; knowledge, belief, and trust. We first gain knowledge about God from both his word and his creation. We then take that knowledge into our hearts by believing it as truth. Lastly we trust that knowledge to the point where it controls our minds and lives. These three qualities make up what it means to have faith. God tells us he will never leave or forsake you. He knows everything there is to know, has all power, and is all places in creation at every moment of time.
The Lord is also good. He has provided us the ultimate and perfect sacrifice of his Son Jesus Christ. If we have learned about Christ in knowledge, have ascended that knowledge into belief, and have thirdly trusted to the point where Jesus himself is at the center of our choices; whom have we to fear? What can possibly separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus? Be strong and courageous people of the cross, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you.
