And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 ESV)
Sunday evening, the four kids were all rough housing around in the living room. Karie and I were at the kitchen table sipping decaf coffee and chatting over the day. Five minutes earlier she had forwarded me an email chain that she was having with a Pastor’s wife from Kentucky. We have met this lovely woman less than a handful of times in our life, yet because of Jesus, she has been praying for us and wanted to encourage and strengthen my beloved from four States away. While reading the email exchange, something that my wife wrote blessed me so much. She said:
“Honestly, my flesh screams to be free from this trial, then the Spirit sweetly whispers truths to cling to.”
This is the battle of the believer in Jesus. It’s the same battle her elder brother the Apostle Paul fought as well and wrote about it in Romans chapter 7:
So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. (Romans 7:21–25 ESV)
Screaming flesh and whispering Spirit. Thank you for your prayers and encouragements. We are sure that they are helping the Spirit’s whisper gain the upper hand in the battle against unbelief.
Blessings to you in Christ this day.
