It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes. -Psalm 119:71
Affliction has a way of making the things of the world taste base, and the words of God taste sweet. When we are afflicted, we look for places of comfort. The temporal pleasures of this world are fleeting and can therefore not bring any lasting solace. But the words of God are eternal in the heavens. It is from them that we learn the words and thoughts of our Maker, Sustainer, and Ordainer in our affliction. Where do we go in times of trouble? Can we say like the Psalmist, It is good for me that I was afflicted? It was good for him because in his affliction, he learned God’s statutes.
