Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent. (Proverbs 17:28)
James tells us “let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger…” I can become so quick to open my mouth and spill out all sorts of gibberish. Why do you think the fool is considered wise when he remains silent? I think it is because so often when we speak, we reveal what foolishness is bound up in our hearts. I went through a stage in my life when I became very aware how much of a fool I actually was. I purposed during that time to close my mouth and not hardly speak at all. This obviously did not last forever, but it did last long enough to begin the process of becoming “slow to speak.”
Jesus redeems our tongue. When he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, he remained silent. He not only died for our heart sins and our bodily sins; but he died for our sinful speech as well. Do you want to be wise? Do you want to be known as a person who is intelligent and filled with wisdom? Close your mouth and open your ears. Amazing things happens when we do.
