Romans 12:13 “Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
—
1 John 3:17-18 “But if anyone has the world ‘s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’ s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”
This verse condemns me if I only tell you to “contribute to the needs of the saints.” If you or I love only in word or talk, how does the love of God abide in us? Well, it doesn’t, according to the Apostle John. Generosity is a virtue that should permeate the whole of the Christian’s life. After all, what do we have that has not been given to us? Proverbs 25:21 tells us that if our enemy is hungry, we are suppose to feed him. And Galatians 6:7 tells us that God is not mocked, whatever we sow, that will we reap also. Hebrews 13:16 says that we are not to neglect to do good, to share what we have because such sacrifices are pleasing to God. If pleasing God is not enough, 1 Timothy 6:18-19 informs us that generosity is storing up treasure for ourselves in heaven; for generosity is the foundation for our future heavenly home.
May you and I contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Have a blessed Lord’s Day!
