8.2.13 — Receiving Help In Our Weakness

Romans 8:26-27

In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with unspoken groanings. And He who searches the hearts knows the Spirit’s mind- set, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

We learned yesterday that the creation joins along with our groaning over sin. But the groaning of creation does not provide us with any help. Today we see that the Holy Spirit also joins in our groaning, but actually will come along and help us in the midst of our groans. So how does he help?

I don’t know about you, but there are so many times I don’t know how to pray for a certain situation. In our family, we have been through some grievous suffering under the heavy and sovereign hand of God. We lay our faces to the ground and just cry because we don’t understand why we don’t understand. It is preciously in these times that the Holy Spirt searches our heart for those unspoken desires. He then goes to the throne on our behalf pleading to the Father of glory according to the will of God. We don’t know how to pray in these times because we don’t understand God’s will; but it is in these times when we receive our help from the one who does know.

The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgement to come; but he also is our Helper. He comes along side of us when we are so consumed with our suffering that we have forgotten anything that we have learned over the years. We can’t think, can’t pray, can’t act, can’t  smile, can’t laugh, and can’t find one glimmer of hope. The light of the gospel of the glory of Christ shines in our darkened heart through the Holy Spirit of God and intercedes to the throne of grace during these moments of weakness.
